The White House Has Designated Plumbers as Essential Service Providers

With the recent spread of the Coronavirus, many Americans are wondering whether they will still be able to get the essential services they need. After all, while people across the country are quarantined inside their houses, it is now more important than ever to be able to maintain a level of comfort and cleanliness. Fortunately, some good news arrived for homeowners last week, when the president and U.S. Department of Homeland Security included plumbers as “essential critical infrastructure workers” in the nation’s response to COVID-19.

The White House released the statement in conjunction with a memo from the DHS and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, which states that certain industries must be allowed to continue operating , "to help state and local officials as they work to protect their communities, while ensuring continuity of functions critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security." This declaration deems plumbers and other home service providers as, “necessary to maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences," and advises workers to continue standard operating procedures while also taking the guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into account.

Meanwhile, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials has recently released its own updated guidelines for plumbers and other service professionals. "This new guidance, to state and local officials from the White House, validates that our industry is vital to the United States,” said IAPMO CEO GP Russ Chaney. “Our highly skilled plumbers have been deemed essential to the nation's ability to function and recognized as people on whom we can all depend in normal times or a global crisis."
