How To Deal With An Emergency Pipe Leak

Picture this: you’ve returned home after a relaxing getaway, and open up the front door and notice water on the floor. First, you gasp and then you take a look around — there are wet spots on the ceiling and on the wall, too!

Indoor flood

You begin to panic, seeing dollar signs as you start thinking about how much it will cost to get this mess under control. Well, take a deep breath and read below to find out what you can do until the plumber arrives:

Step 1: Locate the Main Water Supply

Locate the main water supply in your home and find the valve that controls the flow of water to the pipes.

Water mains typically start at the street and run in a straight line into the house. We recommend looking inside the perimeter of the house beginning with the side facing the street.

Once you find the valve, turn it so that it shuts off the water.

Step 2: Find the Leak

Head over to the wall or the ceiling where you noticed the wet spots when you entered the house. If there’s water staining, or dripping from, the ceiling, there’s a chance the leak is coming from directly above.

Pro tip: water easily travels through pipes and along wires and studs that might be hidden behind the sheetrock. For this reason, locating the origin point of the leak can be quite difficult.

Step 3: Use a Pipe Clamp

If you can locate the area where the pipe is broken or leaking from, you can use a pipe clamp to contain the mess until a professional arrives.

Step 4: Pipe Clamp Alternatives

If a pipe clamp isn’t something you have on hand, epoxy compounds, rubber pipe connectors, wraps or repair sleeves usually work just as well depending on the type of crack, break or leak present.

It’s important to understand that none of the above are permanent solutions. Sure, they may be able to keep things at bay for the time being, but you’ll want to call in an expert plumber right away. That’s where we come in!
