How to Troubleshoot a Slow Drain

More often than not, the pop-up stopper in the sink is the reason it’s draining so slowly. This device tends to collect hair and other debris that washes down the sink and as these items build up, they can prevent water from flowing freely. In addition to the buildup of hair, soap, toothpaste, and hair products can collect in the drain and as this buildup grows, it ultimately reduces the size of the drain pipe.

So, what can you do to get things flowing smoothly again?

  • If the drain isn’t too severely backed up, a zip-it tool will likely be all you need to get the job done. Simply stick it down the drain and lift up — it’s job is to catch hair and other debris and pull these things out of the drain as you lift.
  • If that doesn’t do it, you can remove the pop-up stopper to get a better look at what’s causing the backup. Most are secured by a nut attached to the drain at the bottom of the sink. You may just need to remove the stopper, clean it off and replace it.
  • Still no luck? We recommend using a homemade drain cleaning solution. Pour a small pot of hot water down into the drain and then chase it down with ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of vinegar. This mixture will fizz and bubble and will help break down the buildup. Wait roughly 10 minutes and then rinse the sink with warm water.

If none of the above remedies solve the problem, it’s time to call in a professional. An expert plumber will be able to safely and efficiently disassemble the drain trap, remove the clog, and get things flowing again fast.

Are Chemical Drain Cleaners Safe? The Downsides of DIY Drain Cleaning

At one point or another, most of us have purchased a liquid, gel, or powder drain cleaner to fix a clogged drain. It’s simple, cost-efficient, and you can do it yourself! Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t always work, and even if it does, there are negative side effects that most of us fail to take into consideration.

  • Liquid drain cleaners are made up of extremely powerful chemicals that practically burn through stoppages. Some contain substances such as household bleach, peroxides, and nitrates. As they travel through our drain lines they release heat and gas to help clear stoppages.
  • Liquid drain cleaners are extremely toxic. They can burn eyes, skin, and eat through clothing. They can release poisonous fumes and if used improperly, could even cause an explosion.
  • If liquid drain cleaners can burn through drain stoppages, imagine what they can do to your piping. Because most of these products generate heat, they may soften PVC piping in newer homes and corrode metal piping in older homes. Liquid drain cleaners can even harm septic systems by killing beneficial bacteria and can mar bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

Let Our Experienced Drain Clearing Team in Cape Coral Help You

When the problem is contained to one drain, it might indicate a simpler, local clog. However, if multiple drains in your home are affected, or if the toilet reacts to the use of other water sources in the house, it might be a sign of a more serious problem with your plumbing system.

In some cases, our plumbers need only clean or unclog a single drain, but when bigger problems are present it may indicate a sewer problem. In such cases, our drain experts can find the source of the issue, providing pipe cleaning services, repairs, and replacements as needed.

Contact Aztec Plumbing & Drains to discuss your drain issue and schedule a cleaning, repair, or replacement service with our Cape Coral drain cleaning specialists.
